Former Liverpool star heaps praise on two summer signings

After winning the Premier League title last season and then spending £450m to bolster the squad in the summer, it hasn’t quite been the season that Liverpool were hoping for.

The Reds currently sit sixth in the Premier League table and are four points behind Chelsea in fifth place.

Even worse, they now sit closer to West Ham United in the relegation zone than they do to league-leaders Arsenal.

However, it’s not all bad at the moment. Former Liverpool midfielder Jermaine Pennant, speaking to EPL Index, named two players who has impressed him recently…

Wirtz and Ekitike shine

“I think Ekitike is shining. He has been putting in these performances since the day that he got here,” said Pennant, “Florian Wirtz is my favourite player. He has been putting in good performances too, but with the price tag, you’re expecting lots of goals and assists.”

“If the team was in a better place and the strikers were on form, then he would’ve been flying straight away too,” continued Pennant, “All he can do is create and it’s not his fault if the lads ahead of him are putting those chances away.”

“He just needed a little bit of time to get used to the speed and the physicality of the Premier League and now he is a joy to watch.”

“He glides across the pitch, always picks the right pass.”

When Ekitike first arrived for £69m from Eintracht Frankfurt, he was expected to play a supporting role behind record-breaking signing Alexander Isak.

But here we are, just over the halfway point of the season, and the Frenchman has 15 goals and four assists to his name.

Wirtz is starting to follow suit too. No Premier League player has managed more goal contributions across all competitions since December 20th than Wirtz.
