‘A moment of sadness’ – Arsenal defender Gabriel reflects on his missed Champions League final penalty | OneFootball

Arsenal and Brazil defender Gabriel has reflected on his missed penalty in the Champions League final shoot-out with PSG.

Gabriel’s missed spot-kick meant PSG prevailed after a 1-1 draw in regular time, denying Arsenal a double having already won the Premier League title ahead of the game.

But speaking at the World Cup with the Brazilian national team, ahead of their game against Haiti, the 28-year-old says it is important to focus on the positives.

“I cannot complain,” he said.

“I had a very good season with Arsenal. We managed to achieve the (Premier League) title after 22 years and got to the final of the Champions League.

“When you have to score a penalty, there are consequences, but I’m very happy to be here and to be representing my country.”

Gabriel also thanked Brazil team-mate Marquinhos, who was on the PSG side in the Champions League final and consoled the Arsenal man immediately after missing his penalty.

“That was a moment of sadness for me,” Gabriel reflected. “The first thing he did was not celebrate, but give me a hug. What I can say is that he gave me all the support.

“I’ve been here with him on the national team for two or three years, and I learn every day whenever I’m with him. I’m a fan of him as a person and as a player. My affection for him grew even more after the Champions League final.”
