A Rice & Guimarães pairing could wreak havoc in the Premier League – Opinion

Why a Rice and Guimarães midfield could take Arsenal to another level

For all the transfer speculation surrounding Bruno Guimarães this summer, one question keeps coming back to me: what would Arsenal’s midfield actually look like if Mikel Arteta could pair the Brazilian with Declan Rice?

Forget the financial side of any potential deal for a moment. Purely from a football perspective, it is difficult not to get excited by the possibility.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that Rice and Guimarães would occupy the same role. In reality, they appear to complement each other rather than compete for the same responsibilities, giving Arteta a midfield capable of controlling games both in and out of possession.

Different strengths, one complete midfield

Rice has already established himself as one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders. His ability to read danger, cover huge areas of the pitch and recover possession has become fundamental to Arsenal’s success.

Guimarães, meanwhile, offers something slightly different. Comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, he has the vision and technical quality to dictate the tempo while also contributing in the final third.

Statistics from FBref highlight those contrasting qualities. Guimarães registered nine league goals and five assists last season, compared to Rice’s four goals and five assists, giving the Newcastle midfielder a greater direct attacking output.

Defensively, however, Rice’s reading of the game shines through. He recorded 33 interceptions, more than double Guimarães’ 16, illustrating his ability to anticipate danger before attacks develop.

Interestingly, Guimarães edged the tackles won statistic with 41, compared to Rice’s 33, suggesting the Brazilian is equally willing to compete physically when Arsenal are out of possession.

Those numbers do not suggest one player is superior to the other. Instead, they reinforce the idea that each excels in different areas of midfield play.

With last summer’s midfield signing, Martin Zubimendi, reported receiving interest from Real Madrid, the Guimaraes deal may become critical to the Gunners.

Why the partnership is so intriguing

Football has increasingly become a game of balance, and Arsenal already possess one of the strongest defensive foundations in Europe.

Adding Guimarães would not lessen Rice’s importance. Instead, it could free him to play to his greatest strengths, knowing another technically gifted midfielder is capable of progressing possession and controlling the rhythm of matches.

Against teams that press aggressively, Guimarães has the composure to receive the ball and play through pressure. Against sides looking to counter, Rice’s athleticism, positioning and anticipation would remain invaluable.

Rather than asking one midfielder to do everything, Arsenal could potentially field two players whose skill sets naturally complement one another.

Of course, this discussion remains hypothetical while Guimarães is still a Newcastle United player, and there is no guarantee Arsenal will complete such a transfer this summer.

However, if Arteta ever had the opportunity to build his midfield around both Rice and Guimarães, it is easy to see why so many supporters would believe Arsenal could possess one of the most complete midfield pairings in European football.
