Shaw started alongside Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro in central defence for Man United on Monday night, but could not prevent a surprise 1-0 loss for the hosts at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils were up against the ten-men of Everton for more than an hour after Idrissa Gueye was sent-off for striking team-mate Michael Keane in the face.

Despite the man advantage, there was no way past the Toffees’ resolute defence, and Neville was taken aback by Ruben Amorim’s decision to stick with Shaw operating as a left-sided defender.

While on punditry duty for Sky Sports, Neville was extremely critical of Shaw for not breaking forward from his position quick enough in an attempt to get United back into the game.

“Shaw is ambling forward,” Neville said. “It has been bugging me for the last 20 minutes and now I’m just going to say it.

“He is ambling. Look at him. You can’t do that.

“That is a waste of time. Honestly, it’s a waste of time. It’s not conning anyone.”

Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher said the Man United boss must accept full responsibility for his side’s first defeat in six matches.

“Ruben Amorim feels like the first manager who I’ve seen who sticks with a system rather than an idea of how to play,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“The formation is his baby and to not change it or alter it in certain situations like that, I don’t understand how you can stick with something so steadfastly in a situation like that when it’s basically one guy up front who is not really up front.

“You don’t need three players there, if you’re going to keep the system maybe put midfielders there?

“We see other managers do that, maybe bring on a centre-back off and put a midfielder there because you are going to have so much more of the ball, so much more possession.

“It’s not the losing three points tonight, they can make that up through the season, I think it’s one of those moments where I think a lot of people will question the manager on the back of that defeat.

“They’ll look at the players and we know they should do better but the manager will take a lot of the blame.”
