Federico Dimarco got the start for Inter Milan against Paris Saint-Germain in yesterday’s Champions League final.

Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi stuck with the Italian international for the match. There have certainly been questions about Dimarco’s defensive qualities, but he remains a key player for Inter in possession.

In the end, it was in defense that Federico Dimarco really stood out. And certainly not for the right reasons.

In truth, the 27-year-old found his opportunities to get forward and affect the match in an attacking sense to be very few and far between.

PSG really pushed Inter back on their left flank. And this left Dimarco with a lot of defensive work to do.

And the Italian international simply couldn’t cope with the pressure that Paris Saint-Germain put him under.

The likes of Desire Doue and Achraf Hakimi were able to find the space to build up a head of steam and drive at Inter’s penalty area far too often.

Then, Dimarco’s defending in the penalty area was simply calamitous. The Italian international completely failed to put in a challenge on PSG’s opener, whilst he deflected the ball past Yann Sommer for the Parisians’ second.
