AC Milan are reportedly trying to overtake Napoli in the race for Mario Gila, who appears increasingly likely to depart Lazio this summer.
The 25-year-old is destined to leave the Italian capital after four years of service, as his contract will expire next year, while suitors are queuing up for his signature. Several reliable sources claimed that the Barcelona native has an agreement in principle with Napoli on a five-year deal with a €3 million net salary.
However, the Partenopei are struggling to convince Lazio, as their offers have thus far fallen way below Claudio Lotito’s €25 million asking price. This delay has opened the door for other clubs to pounce, like Atalanta, who entered the fray last week, with Maurizio Sarri interested in a reunion with his Lazio pupil in Bergamo. But according to Gianluca Di Marzio, Milan are also monitoring the situation.
The Sky Sport Italia journalist reveals that the Rossoneri have made direct contact with Gila’s agent, Alejandro Camano. This move could be followed by an offer to Lazio.
Milan have been linked with the former Real Madrid defender in recent months, but these stories faded when Massimiliano Allegri and their former sporting director Igli Tare were sacked at the end of the campaign. The Tuscan head coach was likely behind the Diavolo’s interest in Gila, hence why Napoli launched their onslaught for the Lazio star following his appointment.
Milan replaced the Livorno native with Ruben Amorim, who may have given the green light to relaunch a concrete move for Gila, who is keen to embark on a new experience at a more ambitious club than Lotito’s.
