Manchester United failed in their bid to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion over the summer.

However, the Red Devils were serious in their pursuit and even agreed personal terms with Baleba. The approach suggests that United had the budget to sign a high-profile midfielder despite spending over £200 million on attacking reinforcements.

Ruben Amorim reportedly remains eager to strengthen his midfield and United could dig into their deep pockets mid-season.

Manchester United to fight for Adam Wharton

According to Defensa Central, United are among five clubs keeping tabs on Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton.

The 21-year-old is regarded as one of the Premier League’s most technically secure midfielders in possession. The England international excels at dictating the tempo of the game, drawing comparisons to United legend Michael Carrick.

The Spanish outlet claim United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal have all entered the bidding for Wharton, who is also admired by Real Madrid.

The Premier League sides are reportedly “considering a deal worth around £100 million” to convince Palace to sell their midfielder, who is tied to Selhurst Park until 2029. The Eagles recruited him from Blackburn Rovers nearly 20 months ago for just over £20m.

The report states: “Everything indicates that he could leave Crystal Palace, and these teams would be willing to take him on.”

Wharton focused on Palace and England

Wharton, meanwhile, is relaxed about his future and is focused on being part of Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad.

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Wharton addressed rumours linking him with top clubs.

“I don’t really look into it or think too much about it,” Wharton said. “There are always rumours floating about on social media. Is it true? Is it not? You tell me.”

Interestingly, his teammate Daniel Munoz has chosen not to shy away from talking about his transfer aspirations.

Recently, the 29-year-old Colombian full-back admitted that United would be one of his “dream” destinations.
