Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has been given a new nickname by his adoring SSC Napoli fans.
The Scotland international departed United in the summer after 22 years at the club, as he joined the academy as a young child.
He played 255 times for his boyhood club, winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
The 27 year old always gave one hundred percent but was often criticised by United fans for his lack of technical ability and his struggles to maintain positional discipline in the rigours of a Premier League midfield battle.
Nonetheless, life is going swimmingly so far in the southern Italian city of Naples, as he has made a strong impression on the pitch under Antonio Conte at Napoli, scoring two goals in eight matches so far.
The Sun report “McTominay has been handed a new nickname after his impressive performance against AC Milan.”
He was given a rating of 7.2 on Sofascore for his efforts, making 93% of his passes and completing two out of his three dribble attempts.
He “has gone on to become a crucial cog in Antonio Conte’s side who are now at the top of the Italian top division” and was particularly impressive in their 2-0 victory over European giants AC Milan in the San Siro.
“A video of him driving the ball forward was viewed by thousands of fans, with McTominay being heralded with a new nickname. Napoli fans have fallen for the combative midfielder and have nicknamed him ‘McTotally'”.
In the video, he can be seen receiving the ball on the turn and skilfully and powerfully cutting his way through the Milan midfield like a hot knife through butter.
Whilst a lot of fans of the club believed it was the right decision to sell McTominay, numerous former players have criticised the decision with former United forward Brian McClair claiming, “for me, it’s a big disappointment that he’s not still at Manchester United.”
Former West Ham player Paolo di Canio has also questioned why United sold him and in typical flamboyant fashion claimed all of United’s directors should be “arrested” for making such a decision.
Whilst it is probably still very early to state whether United have made a mistake or not letting the Scot go, most will be glad for the academy graduate that his adventure in Italy has got off to the perfect start.
