The Chelsea starlet all but confirmed her place in the Euros squad

Aggie Beever-Jones has forced the issue of her Euros selection after scoring a half-hour hat-trick against Portugal in the Nations League on Friday night.

Deputising for the injured Alessia Russo, Chelsea striker Beever-Jones was rampant, completing her hat-trick after just 33 minutes. England were five to the good by half-time and went on to put six past the Selecao, with Beth Mead, Chloe Kelly, and Lucy Bronze also on the scoresheet.

After finishing the WSL season with nine goals and playing key roles in Chelsea’s treble-winning cup campaigns, the 21-year-old’s selection was never in much jeopardy, but she will be higher on Sarina Wiegman’s list than ever after becoming just the second Lioness to score a hat-trick at Wembley.

Speaking at full-time, though, Beever-Jones was humble, refusing to consider the prospect of playing at the Euros just four years on from watching England lift the title from the stands.

“I can't quite believe it if I'm honest,” she said. “I'm absolutely delighted right now.

"My main goal was to keep my feet on the ground and keep working. I got the opportunity tonight, and I am grateful to everyone who helped me get into this place.

"I'm just focusing on the current and the now, and everything else will fall into place.”

Wiegman was understandably thrilled with her side’s showing, but, ever the pragmatist, said there were still things to improve.

"That's what we wanted, you go back to business once you're on the pitch," Wiegman said, in reference to England shrugging off the midweek distraction of Mary Earps’ shock retirement announcement. "It's an important game, we want to do well in the Nations League. It's really good to see the team showing up like this."

England open their Euros title defence on July 5, meeting France in Zurich, with the Netherlands and Wales completing the group.
