Boca have suffered a major setback after tests confirmed Agustín Marchesín has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The goalkeeper faces a lengthy spell out.
According to LaNumer12.com.ar, the injury stemmed from the Copa Libertadores tie against Barcelona of Ecuador at La Bombonera. After feeling sharp pain following a visiting attack, he asked to be replaced and Leandro Brey came on.
Marchesín departed in tears, and his distress on the bench pointed to a severe problem, which the medical team has now ratified.
He will miss several months, leaving him out for the remainder of the season. His absence is a major blow ahead of a packed schedule, including the imminent Superclásico at the Estadio Más Monumental and upcoming international fixtures.
Surgery is planned in the coming days, to be performed by Doctor Jorge Pablo Batista. The respected Boca medic has successfully operated on a number of the club’s players with the same ligament damage.
