Here’s a fun one based on the arrivals of Christian Nwachukwu and Jefferson Cáceres. With their signings being linked to a new data-driven approach incorporating Artificial Intelligence.

Now, I don’t have access to the program reportedly being used by United’s new ownership team. But having logged into Open AI’s infamous Chat GPT, I’ve looked into the future. How could Sheffield United’s team look in 2030 according to AI?

The Questions

Firstly, I typed up the current players in the Blades’ squad as per the below Instagram graphic, we released yesterday.

Following this, I asked “Based on the current squad above. What could Sheffield United’s squad look like considering potential signings departures, and retirements?”

From there, the questions became more specific and I’ll update you as we look through the 2030 squad.

As a disclaimer, the AI’s predictions are speculative and the criteria used is based on the current data available to it. Plus, the current squad list I provided.

First recommendations

Goalkeepers

During it’s preliminary analysis of United’s current squad and what it could be by 2030. Chat GPT believes that Michael Cooper and Adam Davies may have moved on.

Leaving, Luke Faxon, as a potential first-choice option should he develop well. With a new experienced (late 20s and early 30s) goalkeeper coming in. Plus, a new academy graduate keeper in the third choice.

Defenders

Among the defenders that AI seemingly definitively believes will leave by 2030 are Harrison Burrows, Sam McCallum and older players like Jack Robinson.

The AI believes Alfie Gilchrist could become a key player if he stays. It believes Harry Clarke will be entering his prime as a Blade and Jamal Baptiste has the potential to be a future leader.

With the potential departures of Burrows and McCallum, a new left-back will be needed. Plus, Femi Seriki or a new signing could fill the right-back role.

Midfielders

Remaining Blades midfielders in 2030 could be academy players Andre Brooks and Oliver Arblaster. With new defensive midfielders necessary with Souza and Choudhury having entered their early 30s.

Although, the AI holds out hope for Callum O’Hare believing he could stay should he ‘remain consistent’. Good luck Callum.

Forwards

The good news for the Blades owners. The new marquee signing of Tom Cannon will reportedly still be at the club in 2030 whilst Ryan One will also be a key Blades’ striker.

The AI admits that Kieffer Moore, then 37, and Ben Brereton-Diaz may have moved on. Plus, unlike some Blades the AI still holds hope for Rhian Brewster. Whilst, acknowledges that he could leave. It says he could stay “if he fulfills his potential”.

Key Transfers and Signings

Chat GPT explained who the profile of players the club may need by 2030. A new first-choice goalkeeper, should Faxon not develop into a starter.

One or two experienced defenders to fill the role of players like Jack Robinson. “A dynamic central midfielder” to complement Oliver Arblaster.

Finally, a young, fast striker to replace Kieffer Moore and Ben Brereton-Diaz.

The Matchday Squad

After giving suggestions of who might stay and the profiles of players that will replace potential departures. I asked the AI, “Can you replace new signings with specific players based on the above profiles?”

So get ready because you’re about to step in the future (possibly).

Formation

The Blades will still be rocking the 4-2-3-1 formation in 2030. This isn’t massively out there given the longevity the previous back five formation. The AI also admits that this formation will be flexible. It can evolve into a 4-3-3 or a 3-5-2 dependent on tactics.

Starting XI

James Trafford is the Blades new number one. By 2030, he will be an experienced goalkeeper. With it more likely the Blades will sign him if we are in the Premier League and Burnley are in the Championship.

Defensively, is where it gets interesting. At right-back, Brooke Norton-Cuffy. The former Arsenal youngster is a promising right-back. He currently plays for Genoa in Serie A. With the AI saying he will be “perfect” for Sheffield United as a solid, attacking full-back. The centre-backs will be current Blades’ defenders Alfie Gilchrist and Jamal Baptiste. Whilst, at left-back, the Blades will replace Burrows, with Liverpool’s Luke Chambers. With the AI believing Chambers may come to Bramall Lane looking for first-team football.

The Blades three starting midfielders will be. Oliver Arblaster becoming a fan-favourite. Alongside Alfie Gilchrist, Arblaster is a strong candidate for Blades’ Captain. Next to him in the midfield as a more progressive centre-mid is Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey. If this sounds outlandish, the AI writes his signing as “if Sheffield United can secure a big signing.” Noting that Ramsey could provide energy as a box-to-box midfielder. The attacking midfielder will still be O’Hare providing creativity and experience to the squad.

The forward-line of 2030 according to AI is similar but interesting. Ryan One is expected to be the right-winger effectively using his pace, strength and dribbling ability. Tom Cannon should have become a clinical finisher in his prime. Whilst on the left is a new signing. Brereton-Diaz fans will be glad to know it is a double-barreled name. Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Bynoe-Gittens could make a return to England in 2027-2028 according to the AI. By 2030, he could be a key attacker at Bramall Lane.

Bench

The back-up goalkeeper will be Luke Faxon. The defenders on the bench will apparently be Harry Clarke and Rhys Norrington-Davies. Benched midfielders will be Andre Brooks and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, with Rak-Sakyi a potential starter depending on how he and One develop. Plus, a return for Tommy Doyle from Manchester City. Finally, a move for recent Spurs goal-scorer, Dane Scarlett, if he doesn’t breakthrough at Spurs.

Tactical Style

The 2030 AI Blades will be high pressing using young dynamic midfielders to play at a high intensity. Baptiste and Gilchrist will be deployed as ball-playing defenders. Bynoe-Gittens and One will provide pace and width. Callum O’Hare will connect the lone forward to the deeper midfielders and defence. Whilst, Cannon and Scarlett, will be depended on to be reliable finishers.

Managers

I love Chris Wilder as Sheffield United manager. Just thought I’d get that out of the way. But during a process that the AI described as ‘tricky’ here are managers that could be in charge in 2030. If Wilder has gone although it doesn’t rule out him still being in the dugout.

The Candidates

The AI broke down their candidates into three different types. From progressive, modern, data-driven managers, to former players to well Chris Wilder.

Data-Driven Managers

Given the reason for this article being the use of AI and data-driven methods to bringing talent into the club. It is realistic that what is used for the players could also be used for managerial appointments.

The two names thrown out by the AI are Kieran McKenna and Marko Mitrovic. McKenna, could be a good long-term option if his time at Ipswich comes to an end and the Blades are in the Premier League. Mitrovic, current USA U20s manager might be on the radar of the Blades new American owners. If they look away from Europe.

Please refrain from laughing at the second former player linked. Phil Jagielka is the first player linked with a return as manager. Jagielka has said in the past that he would be open to coaching but has yet to earn his badges. At number two. Breathe. James McAtee. Unlikely for 2030, but a future manager upon his retirement, the former Blades loanee could be in the Bramall Lane dugout one day. Remember the T1000, let’s not question the AI’s choice here.

The third option is that Chris Wilder stays. The AI believes that if Wilder can make the Blades competitive in the Premier League he could earn a new deal.

The AI places the most likely scenario to be between McKenna and Wilder. McKenna could be the ambitious, statement appointment helping the new owners build a long-term project. With the project based on analytics and attacking football. It does sound plausible, if his time at Ipswich comes to a close in the next half-decade.

Where will Sheffield United be in 2030?

According to the AI, if the Blades are managed by a progressive manager like McKenna. They could finish as high as 8th-12th in the Premier League. This is the best-case scenario with smart recruitment and a strong consistent core squad a must.

The AI’s more ‘realistic scenario’ is between 15th and 18th in the Premier League with managerial uncertainty and a more defensive approach.

AI’s “Worst-Case scenario”, which given our history in them is probably spot-on, is that by 2030, Sheffield United will be hovering around the playoffs. Please let the new owners succeed, please.

Who is one player United should sign using the Nwachukwu and Cáceres method?

The AI recommends that Sheffield United look at 22-year-old, FCSB forward Octavian Popescu. The forward has 23 goals and 23 assists for FCSB in 178 games. He could be worth a go. With his Europa League and Conference League experience. If he ever does sign for the Blades remember Chat GPT said it here first.

Takeaways

Of course, this is just a fun concept based on the reported new scouting method being used at Bramall Lane. Plus, it should be again noted that all of this is speculative based on the current data and the data I provided to the software.

Despite this, even though some of the players predicted here aren’t from as far as Cáceres or Nwachukwu. Plus, the new owners software likely is more detailed than what I’ve used. Some of the names, I wouldn’t have thought of to join the club. So, there is clearly a benefit to consulting AI in opening the full capabilities of the Blades budgets.

It will be interesting to see if any of these predictions come true and how the new owners will compare to Chat GPT’s thoughts. Either way. Up the AI Blades.
