We asked AI which club could be Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl's next destination amid ongoing speculation about his future.
It has been a turbulent start to the summer for Sheffield Wednesday, with plenty of uncertainty hanging over the club as the new season draws ever closer.
After a disappointing second half of the campaign that saw their play-off push collapse, Wednesday finished 12th in the Championship last season, and the problems at Hillsborough have continued into the summer.
The Owls narrowly avoided being hit with a three-window transfer ban after a delay to the payment of wages to players and staff in March, but after the same issue occurred again last month, both the club and owner Dejphon Chansiri have been charged by the EFL, while the South Yorkshire outfit have also been placed under a transfer embargo.
As of Monday afternoon, it is understood that some players and non-football staff are still waiting for their May salaries to be paid in full, 10 days on from when they were originally due, and it is now near certain that Wednesday will be hit with restrictions on paying transfer fees, which could be in place for up to 18 months.
If the financial situation was not concerning enough, the future of Owls manager Danny Rohl is also still unresolved, and the 36-year-old has again made it clear that he is keen to leave the club this summer.
Doubt over Rohl's future at Hillsborough first emerged in December when he became embroiled in a bitter public dispute with Chansiri after being denied a move to Southampton.
It was claimed that Rohl remained on the Saints' radar after they parted company with Ivan Juric following their relegation from the Premier League, and with his release clause said to reduce to just £2 million for Championship clubs, many believed his move to St Mary's was a mere formality, but the South Coast outfit have instead appointed Will Still as their new manager.
Rohl was initially said to be on RB Leipzig's list of managerial targets, but he is no longer believed to be under consideration by the German giants, while speculation linking him with Fulham and Crystal Palace also seems set to come to nothing, with Marco Silva and Oliver Glasner still firmly in place at their respective clubs.
According to journalist Rob Staton, Rohl recently held "positive talks" with Werder Bremen, but his "excessive and prohibitive" compensation figure, which is believed to be as high as £5 million, proved to be a problem for the Bundesliga outfit, and they have since named Horst Steffen as Ole Werner's replacement.
Despite being lower for Championship sides, the fee needed to release Rohl from his contract at Hillsborough is also thought to be a problem for Middlesbrough, who are currently searching for a new manager after the sacking of Michael Carrick, and while the German is also reportedly attracting interest from Leicester City, his exit routes do appear to be running out.
Having first openly discussed his possible next move in a controversial interview last month, Rohl again spoke to the German press over the weekend, revealing that he is hoping to make the switch to the Bundesliga at the earliest available opportunity.
"If it were up to me, as soon as possible. The Bundesliga is obviously something special because I grew up with it. For me, it’s always about working at the highest level. I want to compete against the best teams, with the best coaches," Rohl told BILD.
"I have the good feeling that I’ve been able to generate significant added value over the last 18, 19 months in a demanding league with very different playing styles."
With Rohl's future still no clearer over a month after the end of the season, we asked AI where it believes the Wednesday manager will be heading this summer.
According to ChatGPT, RB Leipzig is the most likely destination for Rohl due to the fact that he has revealed his ambition to manage in the Bundesliga, as well as his familiarity with the club and the previous reports linking him with the vacancy.
Leipzig have been without a permanent manager since parting company with Marco Rose at the end of March, and while Rohl was initially named as one of the main contenders for the job, that speculation has gone quiet in recent weeks, with Rohl himself even refusing to comment on the possibility of a return to the Red Bull Arena in his interview with BILD.
After injury brought his playing career to a premature end, Rohl worked as a video analyst for Leipzig before rising up the ranks to join the first-team coaching staff, and it is possible he could emerge back on the radar of the German outfit, particularly if they were to be turned down by their first choice options.
However, Rohl's decision to conduct another media interview suggests that his search for a new job is becoming increasingly desperate, and finding a club that are willing to meet the Owls' financial demands could be difficult.
