Ajax are reportedly thinking about re-appointing former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after Francesco Farioli’s dramatic departure.
Following Ajax’s dramatic collapse in the Eredivisie title race, Farioli has chosen to step down from his role. Ajax had been leading the standings until last week, when Groningen staged a late comeback and snatched a 99th-minute equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw.
This opened the door for PSV Eindhoven to overtake Ajax in the title race, and they ultimately clinched the championship by a single point on Sunday.
An inconsolable Farioli was in tears after confirmation that the title was gone and earlier today, it emerged that the Italian coach informed Ajax of his decision to leave.
According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Ten Hag is a candidate to replace Farioli. Ten Hag of course managed Ajax during one of their most successful periods, between 2018 and 2022. With him in charge, Ajax won three Eredivisie titles, the KNVB Beker twice, and reached the semi-finals of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League.
Ten Hag has been without a job since he was sacked by United in November last year after a string of poor performances and results.
He won the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup during his two-year stint at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag being on Ajax’s radar has also been confirmed by Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.
Plettenberg wrote on X, “Ajax are now seriously considering Erik ten Hag, following Francesco Farioli’s decision to leave the club. Confirmed.”
“Paul Simonis is another candidate.”
“Ten Hag is also on Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s list, as previously reported.”
A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Ten Hag feels he has unfinished business in the Premier League and would be keen on a return to England.
