Egyptian giants Al Ahly have announced the appointment of Danish mentor Jess Thorup, succeeding Jose Riveiro in the hotseat.
This comes after an extensive search for a new boss in the dugout, with several coaches included in the shortlist.
Ahly reportedly made advances for former Portugal manager Fernando Santos, who guided the Cristiano Ronaldo-headlined team to the 2016 EURO triumph.
However, the veteran boss rebuffed the club’s interest, prompting an approach for his compatriot Bruno Lage, who was recently dismissed by Liga Portugal heavyweights Benfica.
The ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers gaffer also rejected the post after the two parties failed to reach an agreement on personal terms and finer contractual details.
Other candidates on the shortlist included Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso, Jose Gomes and legendary Galatasaray boss Fatih Terim.
But it was the former Augsburg tactician, Thorup, who was earmarked as the right man to take over the reins at the Cairo juggernauts.
The 55-year-old two-time Danish champion and Danish Cup winner penned a two-and-a-half-year deal with the record 12-time African champions.
