According to Mundo Deportivo, Joao Cancelo has yet to report for Al Hilal’s pre-season training camp in Austria, increasing speculation over his future as negotiations over a permanent move to Barcelona continue.

The Portuguese international, who remains under contract with the Saudi club until 2027, had been expected to join the squad on Wednesday, July 29, following his post-World Cup break.

However, the veteran full-back did not arrive as scheduled, raising some concerns within the Saudi Arabian club.

Absence raises questions

Indeed, Cancelo’s failure to report has caught many by surprise.

Fellow Portugal international Ruben Neves, who also plays for Al Hilal, returned on time, completed his medical tests and was welcomed back by the club through its official social media channels.

There has been no similar update regarding Cancelo. Local media covering Al Hilal have sought clarification from the club, but no official explanation had been provided at the time of writing.

Al Hilal were meanwhile in action on Wednesday evening, losing 2-0 to MC Alger during their pre-season tour in Austria.

Barcelona move remains priority

Cancelo’s absence comes as talks over a permanent transfer to Barcelona continue behind the scenes.

Negotiations between the two clubs, facilitated by the player’s agent Jorge Mendes, have been ongoing for several weeks.

Reports suggest the clubs are close to agreeing a deal worth around €10 million, although the transfer has been delayed by tax-related issues.

The defender’s priority remains returning to the Spotify Camp Nou after previously impressing during his loan spell with the Catalan side.

Flick wants him soon

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has already approved Cancelo’s arrival and hopes to have the versatile defender available as soon as possible.

His ability to operate on either flank makes him an attractive addition, with the coaching staff believing he can provide valuable tactical flexibility while addressing several structural needs within the squad.

Provided the remaining details can be resolved, Al Hilal are understood to be willing to complete the transfer, paving the way for Cancelo to return to Barcelona on a permanent basis.
