Sunderland's 2-1 Tyne-Wear derby win at Newcastle United has earned recognition from Alan Shearer and Troy Deeney. According to Sunderland Echo, Shearer selected Brian Brobbey in his Premier League team of the week, and Deeney also highlighted Chris Rigg in his selection.
Newcastle struck first in the 10th minute at St James’ Park, but Chemsdine Talbi levelled before Brobbey settled it with a 90th-minute winner.
Shearer’s forward line features Brobbey alongside Everton’s Beto and Brighton’s former Sunderland loanee Danny Welbeck, both of whom hit braces at the weekend.
Elsewhere in his XI are Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels, his defensive teammate Nikola Milosevic, Brighton duo Jan Paul van Hecke and Ferdi Kadioglu, Everton defender James Tarkowski, Toffees midfielder James Garner, Forest creator Morgan Gibbs-White, and Aston Villa’s John McGinn.
Shearer felt Brobbey was probably Sunderland’s standout, noting the £17 million signing from Ajax and contrasting it with Newcastle’s spend on forwards as he bemoaned their inconsistency. He said Sunderland wanted it more after the break, criticised Eddie Howe’s approach in the earlier meeting at Stadium of Light, and admitted the hosts could not be lifted in the second half.
Deeney praised Rigg for a solid outing on the right, stressing that while nothing was spectacular, the teenager executed every task cleanly and reliably.
