Alan Shearer and Troy Deeney have recognised Sunderland’s derby performers in their Premier League teams of the week, with Brian Brobbey and Chris Rigg earning selection after the 2-1 win at Newcastle United.
Regis Le Bris’ side trailed in the 10th minute at St James’ Park, Chemsdine Talbi equalised, and Brobbey struck a 90th-minute winner. Shearer included the Dutch striker in his XI and said: “Brian Brobbey was probably the best player for Sunderland. £17 million he cost from Ajax. You compare that to Newcastle's recruitment in the summer and what they paid on forwards, and there lies the problem. That's been a huge problem for Newcastle, the inconsistency.” He was speaking on The Rest Is Football.
His XI also included Everton forward Beto and Brighton’s former Sunderland loanee Danny Welbeck, both on the scoresheet twice. The rest comprised Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels, his team-mate Nikola Milosevic, Brighton pair Jan Paul van Hecke and Ferdi Kadioglu, Everton’s James Tarkowski and James Garner, Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White and Aston Villa’s John McGinn.
Shearer added: “Sunderland wanted it more than Newcastle in the second half and that is pretty damning. He couldn't lift his players in the second half and that is really, really worrying and disappointing. They were the better team. They deserved to win.”
Deeney’s selection highlighted teenager Rigg for a solid, disciplined display on the right, noting he did everything well and offered the dependable qualities he is known for.
