Sunderland's Tyne-Wear derby win at St James' Park was reflected in the weekly selections, with Alan Shearer naming Brian Brobbey and Troy Deeney choosing Chris Rigg. According to Sunderland Echo, both made their Premier League teams of the week.
Regis Le Bris' side fell behind in the 10th minute but levelled through Chemsdine Talbi before Brobbey struck in the 90th to clinch a 2-1 win and hush the home support.
Shearer's XI also featured Everton forward Beto and Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, a former Sunderland loanee, after both scored twice at the weekend.
Shearer said Brobbey was probably Sunderland's best player and highlighted the £17 million fee paid to Ajax, contrasting it with Newcastle's summer spend on forwards and their inconsistency. He added Sunderland wanted it more after the break, criticised Eddie Howe, and said the visitors were the better side and deserved the win, even if it pained him.
Deeney praised Rigg's composed shift on the right, calling it a solid display in a memorable derby where nothing was flashy but everything was done well. The former Watford striker felt the teenager offers reliability and exactly what managers expect.
