Alan Shearer is the top scorer in Premier League history and the striker that many modern day fans grew up idolising, so it’s no surprise he’s put at the top of the tree for strikers in the modern game.

Harry Kane was his natural successor, but he’s coming towards the end of his career now, and the question is bubbling up – who is next? Who will be the league’s next great traditional number 9? The Athletic did a Q and A with Shearer today, and asked him just that – but his answer will surprise you.

Shearer picks Palmer as answer to question about strikers.

“I don’t class Cole Palmer as a striker; he’s a modern, versatile forward — but I love him as a player and this is my excuse to write about him! His rise from where he was at Manchester City to where he is now is extraordinary,” Shearer wrote, ignoring the question completely and just deciding to talk about the Chelsea starlet instead – and not for the first time.

“He’s phenomenal at everything, particularly scoring goals, but one of his biggest attributes is not being fazed by anything; he looks like he’s playing in the park with his pals. You’d never know he was operating under any sort of pressure.

“Chelsea wouldn’t be anywhere near as good as they are without him in the team. He dictates everything. His passing ability, his willingness to take the ball in tight areas, his finishing… He has all the hallmarks of being a top-class player for years to come.”

It’s certainly true that the calm and “unfazedness” Palmer shows in front of goal or taking penalties are more reminiscent of a number 9 than a winger or attacking midfielder.

That’s how the Wythenshawe Wizard is able to rack up Shearer-like numbers of goals and assists without even playing up top.
