Nico Williams limped off for Athletic against Valencia at San Mamés, raising fresh concern a month before Spain’s World Cup list and with three league games remaining.
The winger went down on the halfway line in the 34th minute and was replaced two minutes later by his brother Iñaki. Ernesto Valverde consoled him on the touchline as he voiced his frustration, while team-mates tried to lift him.
Until then he had been Athletic’s brightest spark, producing several bursts and a shot on target. He had only just been regaining rhythm after around six weeks out with persistent pubalgia. Across 32 appearances he has six goals, four assists and three penalties won, and has completed only four full matches.
He told DAZN.
Valverde said Williams felt some hamstring discomfort and that they will see tomorrow.
The setback is another concern for Spain, with Lamine, Rodri and Mikel Merino also referenced in this context, and Víctor Muñoz seemingly set for a place after an outstanding season with Osasuna.
