Albert Gronbaek has joined Hambourg SV on a permanent deal, the club said in a statement on Friday. The 25-year-old departs Rennes after failing to establish himself in France.

He moved to Hambourg on loan in January and will now remain in Germany. An option to buy, set at five million euros, was agreed when that second loan of the season was arranged.

Gronbaek arrived from Bodö/Glimt in the summer of 2024 for 12 million euros. He made only 18 appearances for Rennes and scored two goals.

He was loaned to Southampton last season, then to Genoa for the first half of this campaign, featuring in four Serie A matches and two Coppa Italia ties.

With Hambourg, he played seven Bundesliga games, recording one goal and two assists. At international level, the Dane has nine caps and one goal.
