James Morrison’s team put in a much better performance to earn a deserved point at Bramall Lane keeping them just above the relegation zone with ten games to go. It did, however, extend the run of winless league games to twelve, the longest run without a victory since 2020 when Slaven Bilić’s team failed to win thirteen league games in succession, the last four of their promotion campaign plus the first nine of the Premier League season.
This season’s team is still someway short of the club record of 20 league matches set between August 2017 and January 2018 under Tony Pulis, Gary Megson and Alan Pardew. The club record in the second tier is 14 games set between October 1995 and February 1996 under Alan Buckley.
When George Campbell’s excellent strike settled into the corner of the net at Bramall Lane, my first thought was that he’d “done a Tommy Hutchison” by scoring at both ends. Hutchison did so for Manchester City in the 1981 FA Cup Final against Tottenham Hotspur, although he scored at the right end first. The last Albion player to do it was Semi Ajayi who scored both goals in a 1-1 draw with Leeds United at the Hawthorns on New Year’s Day 2020, a second minute opener to put the hosts 1-0 up before Bamford’s header deflected off his shoulder to square things up seven minutes into the second half.
The Baggies have one more point at this stage than they did in 1991 when they suffered their only relegation to the third tier. That season, their next match, a 2-0 defeat at Charlton, would be their final defeat of the season but they would still only pick up thirteen points from the remaining nine games which was ultimately not enough.
