Ex-Manchester United forward Alejandro Garnacho was reportedly handed a clear message from Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni about his place in the national team after sealing a move to Chelsea.
The long-running speculation over Garnacho’s future at United was finally resolved when he joined Chelsea permanently at the end of the summer window.
United and Chelsea struck an agreement at the £40m mark. Ruben Amorim’s side also retain a sell-on clause, which will enable them to profit from any future sale.
Garnacho put pen to paper on a seven-year contract with the Blues.
Garnacho made it clear that Chelsea was his dream move after it became clear he no longer had a place at United, but the winger has yet to secure a regular starting berth under Enzo Maresca.
The 21-year-old has so far been forced to be content with appearances from the bench. As United beat Chelsea 2-1 last weekend, Garnacho wasn’t afforded even a single minute of action and could only watch as his former team ran riot.
But it’s still early days and he will undoubtedly be hoping to finally get a chance and kick on, especially ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
According to DSports, Garnacho sought clarity from Scaloni over his international future but was told he needs to do more to cement his place.
DSports claims, “Aware that his place on the roster is not guaranteed, Garnacho contacted Lionel Scaloni directly to find out his situation.”
“The coach was clear: his selection will depend on his performance and prominence this season, as he is currently behind in the rankings.”
“The coach’s message reflects the demands of the Argentina national team and underscores the importance of reaching the World Cup in competitive form.”
It’s understood that Garnacho must find a way to force himself to be a mainstay under Maresca.
Since making his debut for the Albiceleste in 2023 in a friendly vs. Australia, Garnacho has turned out eight times for his country. He has yet to open his goalscoring account at international level.
