Arsenal came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Anfield with Mikel Merino receiving a second yellow card.
Early on in the season, this fixture would have looked like a potential title decider but Liverpool have been so dominant and Arsenal off the pace compared to previous seasons, that there was little to play for the home side.
Regardless, Arne Slot's side took a two a two-goal lead after a quickfire double. A cross in from the left from Andy Robertson was headed in at the near post by Cody Gakpo in the 20th minute with Arsenal unable to get into their defensive shape following a quick transition.
Then just seconds after the restart Mohamed Salah sent a ball down the channel that Dominik Szoboszlai got on the end of and then sent into the path of Luis Díaz to finish from close range.
Mikel Arteta's team fought back in the second half though and reduced the deficit. Liverpool's defence made it far too easy for Leandro Trossard to send a ball in from the left just a few minutes after the restart that Gabriel Martinelli was able to head in.
Then there was an unusual moment in Anfield as academy product Trent Alexander-Arnold received mostly boos from the home crowd – with a scattering of applause – as he came on to replace Conor Bradley in the 67th minute.
Soon after that, it was all level. Martin Odegaard fired an effort in from the edge of the area that Alisson Becker did well to push onto the post. Mikel Merino was the first to react as he then headed in from close range.
Less than ten minutes after scoring, Merino received his marching orders for a careless lunge on Szoboszlai that gave Anthony Taylor no other option.
There were chances for both teams right at the end with Robertson putting the ball in the net only for the flag to be raised but the game eventually finished 2-2.
Of course, for Liverpool the result here was largely meaningless but for the Gunners it was an important point as the race for Champions League places draws to its conclusion.
