Alexander Isak (25) has broken his silence on his British record £125m move to Liverpool, admitting that “not everyone has the full picture” after a summer transfer saga that stretched to deadline day.
The Sweden international became the Premier League champions’ marquee signing of the window, but his path from Newcastle to Anfield was fraught with tension. Liverpool’s initial £110m offer was rebuffed, leaving Isak sidelined from first-team training and forcing Eddie Howe to start the season without a recognised No. 9. Newcastle explored replacements, missing out on several targets, before securing Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade, a move that unlocked Liverpool’s record bid and secured Isak’s dream move.
Reported by The Athletic, Isak, speaking to Swedish media on international duty, suggested there was more to the story than had emerged publicly. “Not everyone has the full picture, but that’s something for another day,” he said. “I can’t control everything that’s said or written, but I’m happy that I became a Liverpool player. It’s great that everything was settled before the camp and that I could focus on football again.”
The 25-year-old’s lack of pre-season minutes restricted him to a substitute appearance in Sweden’s 2-0 defeat to Kosovo. Manager Jon Dahl Tomasson confirmed Isak had only completed three sessions with the squad.
Back in England, the forward will now join up with the Liverpool squad, where he will have to compete with fellow new arrival Hugo Ekitike, who has made an instant impact with three goals in four games, for the number 9 spot. Liverpool’s next game will be away at Burnley, but Isak’s Premier League home debut could come in the Merseyside derby against Everton.
