Alexander Isak scored what proved to be his last ever Newcastle United goal on 4 May 2025, a penalty at Brighton in the Premier League.
As we move on to more than six and a half months later, the striker has scored only one goal for club and/or country.
On 23 September 2025 against second tier Southampton, Alexander Isak on target as Liverpool scrambled a lucky 2-1 League Cup victory.
In these last six and a half months and counting, we also saw the Sweden star make a £130m switch to Liverpool, going on strike, refusing to train or play for Newcastle United, in order to force a move.
Everybody wanted to talk about how this would ruin Newcastle’s hopes of success.
Nobody really talking about how this refusing to play or train might impact Alexander Isak himself.
Nor indeed, how it could harm Liverpool or Sweden.
Well, the misery continues for Alexander Isak and the teams he plays for (not so often…)
Last night, Alexander Isak hiding on the bench as his and Sweden’s humiliation became complete. A World Cup qualifying group that saw them finish rock bottom with no wins, 12 points behind Switzerland, nine adrift of mighty Kosovo and lucky to be only two points behind Slovenia.
Sweden going behind and Graham Potter making five substitutions to try and rescue the match, Alexander Isak staying rooted to the bench though, no doubt very wary of the reaction from the Sweden fans in a home game, after his selfish actions had so badly sabotaged their chances of automatic World Cup qualification.
Lundgren eventually rescued an 87th minute point but this has been a shocker, especially when their supposed leader was hiding away once again.
The Liverpool striker had said (see below) after the 4-1 hammering by Switzerland when he played the final half hour, that he was physically fine now, yet never left the bench last night.
Since Alexander Isak scored that single goal when scrambling a 2-1 win over Southampton, Sweden and Liverpool have played 14 matches between them that Alexander Isak could have played in, if willing and available.
Pretty stark findings when you realise that in the 14 matches, between them Sweden and Liverpool have lost 10 of the 14, only three wins and now this one draw.
Last night’s match saw Emil Krafth play the first 65 minutes before the Newcastle United defender was subbed off.
The only silver lining for Emil Krafth, Anthony Elanga and their former club teammate, is that Sweden’s past Nations League results have seen them fluke a place in the World Cup play-offs in March.
Alexander Isak talking about his fitness situation the other day after playing the final half hour of Sweden’s 4-1 hammering by Switzerland, ahead of last night’s Slovenia match – 15 November 2025
“It was about half an hour [I got in this match].
“It felt okay.
“I feel like the reaction was good after the match in my body.
“Hopefully I can play properly in the next match [against Slovenia on Tuesday].
“It’s always frustrating when you’re injured. Regardless of whether it’s one match or more. It’s always worst for the player himself.
“It hasn’t been optimal. But when I’m on the field, I don’t give myself any excuses. I always want to play my game and perform.
“But yes, it’s hard to be away and not be able to help and contribute. Now I’m back and I’m positive. There’s not much that’s easy in football. But with experience you learn to deal with things.
