Alyssa Thompson made only her second start in the WSL in Sunday's win over Tottenham Hotspur but has already shown exactly why Chelsea splashed the cash for the American attacker.

The 20-year-old is Chelsea's record signing with the reigning league champions spending over £1 million to sign the player from Angel City City in the summer.

Thompson would have been the most expensive women's transfer in women's football had London City Lionesses not forked out £1.4 million for Grace Geyoro.

Still, Thompson looks like money well spent for Sonia Bompastor based on her cameos so far.

The California native has only started two WSL games, the 4-0 win over West Ham United last month and the 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday – a game in which Chelsea really should have found the net more often.

Yet despite not completing 90 minutes for her club so far this season, Thompson is putting in impressive numbers.

Thompson ranks joint seventh in the league for key passes (10) with only Erin Cuthbert making more key passes for her team (12) so far. Meanwhile only four players have made more passes into the penalty area than Thompson (10 once again). Here the American is number one for her club, ahead of Johanna Rytting Kaneryd on eight.

What has really stood out for Thompson so far is her direct football and, of course, her lightning fast runs in wide areas.

Unsurprisingly, the Chelsea forward is unsurpassed for crosses into the penalty area in the league this year with five, tied with Manchester City's Kerstin Casparij.

But of course, Thompson's stats need to be put through the lense of her relatively limited playing time as she settles to life in London.

To better put the youngster's impact into context, only Lauren Hemp has more shot-creating actions per 90 minutes this season (7.61 per 90 minutes) than Thompson (6.48), ranking the player ahead of the likes of Mariona Caldentey (5.71), Kosovare Asllani (5.37), and teammate Catarina Macario (5.35).

Surprisingly, despite all of Thompson's creative work she is yet to create an assist or score a goal for her team but considering her outstanding display at the weekend, it's only a matter of time.
