Sunderland produced a sharp display but drew 0-0 with Manchester United at the Stadium of Light. Régis Le Bris’ side kept pushing for a winner, while Amad Diallo received a warm reception from the home crowd.
According to Sunderland Echo, captains Granit Xhaka and Bruno Fernandes shared a hug in the tunnel, with Robin Roefs and Senne Lammens also shaking hands.
Sunderland started on the front foot. Noah Sadiki was denied by Lammens after Enzo Le Fée’s pass, and a VAR handball check brought no penalty. By the 27th minute Amad was applauded at a corner, a banner reading, “Welcome home, Amad”, and Roefs recovered from a slip before the break.
After the interval Sunderland tweaked shape, Lutsharel Geertruida stepping infield and Trai Hume reverting to right-back. Brian Brobbey was foiled on 65 minutes by Lammens, then five minutes later Geertruida struck the post. Amad departed to a standing ovation and songs from the Roker End.
With three minutes left Fernandes raged at Nilson Angulo, no foul was given, and Le Bris sent on Eliezer Mayenda for Hume. United threatened late but Roefs intervened, and Matheus Cunha was booked for diving. Referee Stuart Atwell was booed off.
After full-time Amad chatted and embraced former team-mate Luke O’Nien. The Roker End also urged Sunderland to keep Geertruida, chanting “sign him up” amid uncertainty over his future.
