Sporting Lisbon believe Ruben Amorim’s move to Manchester United is a ‘done deal’ as the clubs negotiate a compensation package.
Amorim is the leading target to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, following the decision to sack the Dutchman on Monday. Ten Hag was dismissed with the Red Devils 14th in the Premier League table after nine games.
United are aiming for a swift replacement process and negotiations are ongoing to bring Amorim to the Premier League.
The 39-year-old has won plaudits for his work in Portugal, after ending Sporting’s 19-year wait for a league title in 2020/21. He has lifted two Primeira Liga titles with the capital side.
Amorim is open to the challenge of restoring Manchester United to the top of English football and is prepared to leave Sporting mid-season. Sky Sports are reporting that the Portuguese champions believe their head coach’s move to Manchester is a ‘done deal’.
Sporting are holding out for a fee of €15m (£12.45m) to allow Amorim to leave Estádio José Alvalade, alongside coaches Carlos Fernandes and Adelio Candido, and goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has been placed in interim charge of Manchester United, is expected to leave Old Trafford when the new coaching staff arrive.
Sporting are understood to be disappointed with the release clause in Amorim’s deal. However, there is an acceptance the club cannot match the offer from United, who are set to triple his wages.
The Red Devils will hope to have Amorim’s appointment finalised before this weekend’s Premier League clash with Chelsea.
