Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim insists he wants to keep his talented players at the club, amid uncertainty surrounding the futures of Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.
Rashford has been linked with a move to AC Milan, while Mainoo has been linked with clubs including Chelsea, as the 19-year-old’s future has been brought into question under new manager Amorim.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup third-round clash against Arsenal, the United boss addressed the challenges of managing squads and transfers.
“My players are all my favourites, so I really love my players,” Amorim said. “I want to keep my players, especially the talented ones. I’m really happy with Kobe’s improvement and also with Garna [Garnacho].
“I didn’t say that I want new players. I said we need to improve recruitment, so that when we are targeting players we are sure they can cope with the demands.
“Also, we have to improve our academy. Young kids that feel the club in the right way and do some business to have money to invest in the team.
“Our idea is always to keep the best players and to build for this club, but I am really happy and like our players, especially the guys from the academy.”
Amorim said Mainoo and Rashford have been in training and are in contention to play on Sunday, and confirmed that Altay Bayindir will start in goal rather than regular goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Sunday’s match will be Amorim’s first experience of the FA Cup, as United look to continue their title defence.
“I see what everybody sees,” he added. “It’s a really old competition with a lot of history. We know we have a really strong match. We want to win and to continue with our performance.
“I will choose the best team to win because we want to win the cup – in the cup, you never know. So let’s win. Sometimes it’s better to win this kind of game.”
