According to Metro Sport, Amorim is again being considered in England as a potential successor to José Mourinho at Benfica, with the club monitoring developments. If Mourinho leaves after the World Cup, Amorim would be the leading candidate.

Amorim returned to the spotlight in Portugal after a turbulent exit from Manchester United. He departed early this year following 18 months at Old Trafford marked by disagreements with the hierarchy, and Michael Carrick has taken interim charge.

The scenario hinges on Mourinho’s future. The Portuguese FA could offer the Benfica coach the national team job once the tournament ends, regardless of whether Portugal win it.

Mourinho has a contract at Benfica until 2027, though there is a clause that allows the agreement to be ended at the close of 2025/26.

Amorim’s United stint dented his standing among Europe’s most highly rated young coaches, yet he remains well regarded in Portugal. He spent nine years at Benfica as a player and retains strong support among the club’s leadership.
