Francis Amuzu’s late World Cup push has hit a snag, with Grêmio deciding not to release the winger for Ghana’s friendly against Mexico on 22, which falls outside a FIFA window. The stance could leave his World Cup dream further away.
According to Globo.com, the club are under no obligation to let him travel. The 26-year-old has seven goals and three assists in 26 outings this season and is the club’s second-highest scorer. He has started 20 times under Luís Castro.
Travelling would have sidelined him for up to four matches, against Confiança, Bahia, Palestino and Santos, between 14 and 23.
Amuzu joined in early 2025 from Anderlecht for €1.2 million, R$7.1 million at the time, after spending his entire professional career there.
He played 33 times last season, scoring five with three assists, but injuries and a mid-year spell out of favour checked his impact. A conditioning programme and regular dialogue with then coach Mano Menezes followed.
A cameo against Vitória in the 25th round proved a reset, as he came on to score and assist in a 3-1 win. He then finished as a starter, striking twice in his final three appearances of 2025.
Amuzu’s deal runs to the end of 2026 and there is an expectation of a renewal, but the club must act quickly. By mid-year he can sign a pre-contract elsewhere.
