James Milner has been hailed by former Leeds United teammates after confirming his retirement on Monday, ending a 24-year career in professional football.

The player said in a post that he was calling time on a journey that began as a Leeds teenager, with a loan at Swindon Town followed by Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton.

He became the Premier League’s record appearance-maker earlier this year, finishing with 658 top-flight games. His honours include three league titles, a Champions League and multiple domestic cups.

Jonathan Woodgate praised an incredible career and called him an example to all players. Ian Harte, who featured in Milner’s 2002 debut at West Ham, wished him a happy retirement and plenty of golf. Robbie Keane sent congratulations, while Liam Cooper highlighted his example and signed off with MOT.

Messages also arrived from outside Elland Road, including Frank Lampard, Georginio Rutter and Harry Wilson.

His journey took him from a Leeds debut at 16, and becoming the Premier League’s youngest scorer, to battling a foot issue last year. He then helped Brighton qualify for Europe for the second time in their history at 40.

He thanked every club and the people behind them, from owners and staff to coaches, teammates and supporters. He highlighted representing England at two European Championships and two World Cups, the friendships made, and paid special tribute to his family.
