An in-depth look at our opponents this weekend…

We welcome Wolves to the Etihad Stadium in a 15:00 (UK) kick-off on Saturday 24 January.

City will be going for a first Premier League win of 2026 after three draws and a defeat to start the calendar year in the top-flight.

However, we still go into the weekend in second place – seven points behind leaders Arsenal.

We ran riot at Molineux on the opening day of the season in the reverse fixture, winning 4-0 in the August sunshine.

This January meeting will be played in different conditions no doubt, but what do we know about the side we’ll face?

With the help of Opta data, we find out more about them…

Recent form

Sitting bottom of the Premier League table with just eight points from 22 games, Wolves appear set for relegation this season.

However, they are currently in the midst of their best run of form of the season, going unbeaten in their last four league games.

That’s comprised of draws with Manchester United, Everton and Newcastle United as well as a win over West Ham United.

They’ve also had a victory over Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup, so the visitors will have more confidence than at any other point in the campaign when they arrive in east Manchester this weekend.

Preferred formation

Rob Edwards has favoured a 3-5-2 formation since taking over and the personnel within that has been fairly settled in recent weeks.

Jose Sa is the goalkeeper with Ladislav Krejci, Yerson Mosquera and Santiago Bueno the three centre-backs in front of him.

The wing-backs have been Jackson Tchatchoua on the right and Hugo Bueno on the left, while Brazilian internationals Joao Gomes and Andre provide the solid footing in midfield.

They’re joined by a more attacking option in Mateus Mane, who tries to get forward in support of Hwang Hee-chan and Tolu Arokodare, with Jorgen Strand Larsen currently being used as an impact substitute.

Manager

Edwards came to national prominence as a manager when he guided Luton Town in the top-flight via the 2022/23 Championship play-offs.

Operating on a shoestring budget by Premier League standards, Edwards’ Luton gave a good account of themselves but ultimately succumbed to relegation.

He then left the club midway through the following campaign before arriving at Middlesbrough in the summer of 2025.

WOLVES BOSS : Rob Edwards

However, after a promising start on Teesside, he chose to make the move to Wolves in November - the club he’d been most successful with as a player.

He eventually guided Wolves to their first win of the campaign earlier this month and has overseen an upturn in results, even though they remain bottom of the Premier League.

Head-to-head record

City and Wolves have faced each other 23 times in the Premier League, with City coming out on top 16 times.

In that time, we’ve scored 55 goals – an average of 2.4 per meeting.

As part of that, we have won 10 of our last 11 Premier League games against Wolves, with the exception being a 2-1 loss at Molineux in September 2023.

How they attack

Wolves’ 15 goals so far is the worst in the division. While that is significantly down from their xG of 20, that chance creation is only the second worst in the league.

That comes from just 197 shots, which is the 19th best in the division – only three more than Burnley and almost half of the league’s keenest shooters Manchester United on 362.

DANGER MAN : Mateus Mane

They’re also the worst for creating Opta-defined ‘big chances’, while they are yet to score a goal on the break and have only netted three headers – the 17th best in the division.

They are more dangerous in the first half than the second half, with only five goals added after the break being the worst of all 20 sides.

They tend to target open play crosses and their 342 so far is the fourth most in the league but only Liverpool have scored from fewer set pieces than them.

Hwang Hee-chan, Santiago Bueno, Ladislav Krejci and Mateus Mane all have two goals each, with no one netting more than that so far.

Left-back David Moller Wolfe is the only man to supply more than one assist thus far too.

How they defend

West Ham and Burnley have both conceded more than Wolves’ 41 goals let in – an average of 1.86 per match.

That’s come from an xG conceded of just 30.4, which is the ninth best in the division and suggests an underperformance between the sticks.

In goal, Sam Johnstone and Jose Sa have shared the work.

Johnstone is 19th of 28 goalkeepers in terms of save percentage, stopping 61.9% of the shots on his goal, while Sa is 25th with 52.8%.

They tend to be good at keeping out set plays, having only conceded from six in total – the third best in the Premier League.

While they are also overperforming for their position when it comes to late goals conceded, with only eight going in during the final 15 minutes.

Wolves have committed more fouls than anyone else in the division too, only 310 in total.
