Andre Onana may hold the cards to his potential move to Trabzonspor, if recent reports are to be believed.
Onana never truly clicked at Manchester United, and last summer, two seasons after completing his £47.2 million switch from Inter Milan, the club allowed him to leave on loan.
He headed to Turkish Süper Lig side Trabzonspor, where he set about reinventing himself. Out on loan, he looked decent, producing quality performances that left many wondering what had really held him back at Old Trafford.
Despite his resurgence, there is still no way back for him at United, not with how fantastic his replacement, Senne Lammens, has been.
Signed for £18.2 million last summer, Lammens has proven a massive hit between the sticks for the Red Devils, so brilliant that he was named the Premier League transfer of the season.
With 23-year-old Lammens in place, United’s goalkeeping department looks set for years to come. There is, however, still some sorting to do; the club needs to move on from both Altay Bayindir and Onana, who proved not good enough.
Where Bayindir ends up remains a mystery, though there is interest from Turkey. Onana, meanwhile, could return to Trabzonspor, where he ended the season as something of a hero.
According to Sabah, “The Black Sea giants have submitted an offer to the Cameroonian goalkeeper, whom they loaned from Manchester United last season.”
The report adds that “Trabzonspor, wanting a decision to be made by the end of the training camp, has also prepared a Plan B in case of a negative outcome.”
That Plan B is apparently Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper José Sá, with initial approaches already made to gauge the possibility of a transfer.
With Onana holding the keys to this deal, one would hope he would greenlight it and draw a line under what has become a nightmare chapter at Old Trafford.
INEOS would gladly sanction his exit; there are already murmurs that they are pursuing an experienced deputy, such as Karl Darlow, to back up Lammens.
