Andre Onana had to watch from the bench as Manchester United were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
Altay Bayindir, who was culpable for the goal that gave Arsenal the win in the opening Premier League game of the season, was once again handed the responsibility of starting in goal against the Cottagers.
He looked nervous every time a set-piece was won by the home side, but it has since come to light that the Turkiye international will not be leaving Old Trafford at least until January.
With Senne Lammens’ arrival only a matter of time, the Red Devils will need to get rid of one goalkeeper this window. And that means the Cameroonian might be in danger.
Ever since former manager Erik ten Hag brought him to the club, the 29-year-old has consistently committed high-profile mistakes and Ruben Amorim’s patience seems to have finally run out.
He did send out a statement with his team selection against Marco Silva’s men, and that upset the United No.1. So much so that he is now prepared to leave the 20-time English league champions.
As revealed by journalist Graeme Bailey on UiF, intermediaries have been offering the Cameroon international’s services to several clubs, with West Ham United among those interested in a move.
A loan exit could be in the pipeline with the Hammers far from impressed with their current goalie, Mads Hermansen.
“Intermediaries have held active talks with a number of clubs about a loan deal for Andre Onana and we can confirm one of those clubs is West Ham United.
“West Ham have already signed Mads Hermansen but it is believed they are now considering alternatives and one of those could be Onana.
“Onana’s position on his future at United has changed in the last week – whilst he understood why he was not called up to face Arsenal, the decision to leave him out against Fulham was shocked him and a number of teammates.
“With Ruben Amorim seemingly preferring Altay Bayindir, we now understand that Onana is actively considering his options and ready to leave – given United are progressing with their deal for Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens.
Bailey added, “Onana is now unhappy at this current situation and he is ready to look at options and West Ham could be one of those, but there are others.
“With Lammens coming in, we could be about to see a changing of the guard at United – Lammens was never really seen as coming straight in as number one, but it could play out in that way.”
Lammens was reportedly initially expected to play a backup role, but plans have clearly changed over the last fortnight or so.
Bayindir will be a relieved man, or so he would have thought. There are rumours that INEOS could target another shot-stopper this window, with Dominik Livakovic on the club’s radar.
The entire department might be upgraded in one window, and fans will not be too disappointed given the form both Andre Onana and Bayindir have shown over the last 12 months.
