FC Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta recently announced his retirement from professional football. Since his announcement, tributes have poured in from all corners with the likes of Lionel Messi sending a special message as Iniesta embarks on a new phase of life.

Iniesta is a legend of the modern game. He has defined an entire generation and has emerged as the reference for how a midfielder must be and along with Xavi Hernandez and Sergio Busquets, the trio can stake a claim for the best midfield trio in the history of the game.

Obviously, since his retirement, the first question that comes to the mind of the Blaugrana faithful is whether Iniesta is set to return to his beloved Barcelona in some capacity in the near future, just like Xavi did recently.

Now, SPORT has revealed that Iniesta, in an exclusive interview, has admitted that he would love to return to the club in the future in some capacity. Here is what he had to say:

“My feelings will never change; I hope that at some point in my life and my career, the possibility of returning to Barça arises. Because the context is good, and everything is in place for it to happen.”

However, the 40-year-old Spaniard admitted that things will take their own course and that it doesn’t make sense to talk about it today:

“But as of today, talking about what or how makes no sense. Of course, I would like that. My goal is to obtain my coaching license, and we’ll see what happens and what life has in store for us, where we will be. It is one of my objectives.”

Iniesta has had a glorious career as a player, making 885 appearances across clubs, scoring 93 goals, and providing 161 assists. He has also made 131 appearances for the national team and has won the 2008 and 2012 Euros and the 2010 World Cup with La Roja.

However, as we have often seen with many ex-players, a successful playing career doesn’t always translate into a successful coaching career and Iniesta will have to work hard to ensure that he is on course to move into management when the time comes.

Right now, it’s time for Andres Iniesta to enjoy a few months as a retired footballer. With time, the desire to get back into the game is bound to come, and let’s see if the 40-year-old ends up in Barcelona in some capacity in the future.
