Andrew, a Botafogo academy graduate, helped Flamengo into the Campeonato Carioca semi-finals with a 2-1 win at Nilton Santos and emerged with a clear vote of confidence from his coach.
According to Globo.com, he left Botafogo without ever playing at the stadium where he grew up. On Sunday he started, completed 90 minutes, conceded once, made five saves and was heavily involved in build-up play with 95% passing accuracy, misplacing one of 23 attempts, despite home jeers.
He said the reception was expected, stressed gratitude to Botafogo staff from a decade in their system, and added that chapter is over as he is happy at Flamengo and pleased to have helped secure progression.
Andrew addressed claims he was too advanced for Barboza’s goal by saying he still needs to review the footage. He noted he recently conceded when positioned high, insisted that cannot alter the game plan for a team that defends and plays on a high line, and said he would revisit the incident to improve.
Filipe Luís defended his goalkeeper, saying keepers need rhythm and that Andrew is benefitting from important minutes, with variations between the Carioca and Brasileiro balls also a factor. He added that even with Rossi on the bench and a substitution window available, he would have kept Andrew on had the clássico gone to a shootout.
Flamengo face Lanús on Thursday in the Recopa Sudamericana, first leg at La Fortaleza in Argentina at 21:30 Brasília time. The return is next Thursday at the Maracanã, also at 21:30.
