Former Leeds United favourite Andrew Hughes has taken a set-piece coaching role at Athletic Club.
The club said in a statement that he will be the set-piece specialist and will join the team next Monday, noting he worked in that capacity with Scotland at the World Cup and has been on the coaching staff at Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers.
Hughes spent three years at Elland Road from 2007 to 2010, making 139 appearances across all competitions. He helped Simon Grayson’s side win League One promotion in 2009/10.
After retiring in 2015, he held a series of coaching posts in the EFL and was most recently at Leicester City. He left the Foxes to join Steve Clarke’s Scotland staff for the World Cup.
Earlier this month Athletic appointed Edin Terzic as head coach. The 43-year-old will have Hughes among his backroom staff.
Marcelo Bielsa previously made his European mark with Athletic, notably winning 3-2 at Manchester United in a Europa League last-32 first leg. They then won 2-1 at home to eliminate Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.
Athletic finished 12th in La Liga last season, a tight campaign in which only three points separated them from relegated Mallorca. The Bilbao club nevertheless ended six places clear.
