Angel Gomes opens up on Man Utd exit and journey to first England call-up | OneFootball

England midfielder Angel Gomes admits it has been difficult since leaving Manchester United – but insists receiving his first England call up has made the tough moments worth it.

Gomes is in the England squad for the first time for the games against Ireland and Finland under interim boss Lee Carsley, who we worked with in the U21 setup.

The 24-year-old, who now plays for French side Lille, left Manchester United in 2020 after coming through the youth ranks and also spent time on loan at Portuguese side Boavista after joining the Ligue 1 club.

And speaking about his journey, Gomes said: “When I left (Manchester United) it was more the idea to better myself as a player and person, being (on) the journey I went through I knew eventually I’d be able to create a pathway to be in this position I’m in now.

“It was difficult leaving the club I was in since six (years old) and heading into the unknown really for me personally.

“From then it’s been an uphill trajectory, but also with a lot of difficulties and difficult moments going through it, but being in this position now makes it all worth it.”

Gomes also believes his versatility can benefit England, adding: “I’d like to say I’m just a midfielder,” when asked about what he can bring to the team.

“I can operate in all three roles. I can play as the deep lying midfielder, I can play as the number eight, I can play as the number ten.

“I just love to play in the midfield and be able to distribute and help the team play in all different areas of the pitch. I’m confident, I like being on the ball and I like taking responsibility.”
