At halftime of Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa yesterday John Stones was replaced by Kyle Walker. As soon as the substitution was made you did fear that Stones had suffered another injury. When Pep Guardiola spoke post-game, he confirmed that Stones had suffered a reoccurrence of the injury that had kept him sidelined until the Manchester derby. It is a blow for Manchester City, but at this point, it isn’t a surprise to see John Stones go down with another injury.
Speaking after his team’s defeat at Aston Villa Pep Guardiola confirmed that Stones had suffered another injury set back. In an interview published on mancity.com he said: “In the last 10 minutes, he said it had come back again, and he had a disturbance in what he had the last month. It’s the same as it has been for three months. It’s the same but I have to deal with that. Manu [Akanji] had two training sessions and played 90 minutes. Same for Kova [Mateo Kovacic]. He has been one month out after international break. What do we do? We have to play the games with the players that we have.”
Manchester City have seen nearly all of their defenders suffer from injury issues this season. John Stones, Manuel Akanji, Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake have all gone down this season. The problem is that they can’t work their way back to full fitness. As soon as they are fit enough to play they are back starting games. That has seen the treatment room become a revolving door for City’s defenders.
It wasn’t a surprise to hear the news that John Stones is once again injured. At this point he losing the battle against his own body. But Manchester City’s defensive injury crisis has claimed yet another victim. This time it was John Stones and now we wait for more information on just how long he will be out for after yesterday’s news.
