Anthony Gordon was the official Newcastle United player of the season for 2023/24.

The winger did the Premier League double, with 11 PL goals and 10 PL assists, double figures on both kinds of PL direct goal involvements.

That ensured he was on the plane to the Euros.

However, Gareth Southgate treated Anthony Gordon appallingly, despite England struggling throughout for goal threat, gormless Gareth refused time and again to give the Newcastle United star any kind of proper go.

The only positive is that Anthony Gordon could at least say he had ‘played’ at a major tournament with England coming on in the 89th minute against Slovenia and instantly producing a brilliant run and pass that opened up the opposition for pretty much the first time in that game.

Anyway, thankfully Southgate is now history.

Although fair to say that the summer tournament didn’t do Anthony Gordon any favours early on this season. Whether fatigue and/or the mental side of things when demoralised by Southgate’s treatment.

You also have to factor in that at the end of the 2022/23 Premier League season, Anthony Gordon also went pretty much straight into international mode as well, he was player of the tournament as England won the Under 21 Euros. Constant football eventually has some impact.

Fast forward to the present day though.

As the season has progressed, so has Anthony Gordon!

Obviously the whole Newcastle United team have done so.

What about the Anthony Gordon contribution in particular though?

I had an idea to do this article on him and how he has got better and better as we go deeper in the season.

However, nothing quite prepared me for what I would find to be the reality…

Last 11 Newcastle United matches and the Anthony Gordon direct goal involvements:

Newcastle 4 Leicester 0 – Anthony Gordon assist

Ipswich 0 Newcastle 4 – Anthony Gordon assist

Newcastle 3 Villa 0 – Anthony Gordon goal

Scoring in five different wins, getting an assist in each of the other five victories.

Player of the season got 21 NUFC direct goal involvements last season, scoring 11 and 10 assists.

This season so far it is 13 NUFC direct goal involvements, scoring seven and six assists.
