“That’s the worst situation I’ve dealt with in terms of abuse,” he told the BBC. He was speaking about the abuse he faced from Roma supporters in Budapest after the 2023 Europa League final.
Assistant referees Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn will run the lines, Ben Toner is fourth official, with Michael Salisbury on VAR and Peter Wright as assistant VAR.
It is his second Sunderland appointment this season after he oversaw the Black Cats’ 2-1 win over Brentford in August. He awarded a penalty for a Rico Henry foul on Habib Diarra, converted by Enzo Le Fée, before Wilson Isidor struck a 96th-minute winner.
The 47-year-old has officiated major finals including a Europa League final, a FIFA Club World Cup final and two FA Cup finals. His most recent game was Lille’s 2-0 victory at Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League last week.
After the 2023 final, José Mourinho called him a “disgrace” in his post-match interview, which led to a four-game ban. Roma and Sevilla drew 1-1 before the Spanish side won on penalties, and Taylor issued 13 yellow cards.
