LaLiga 2026-27 will start on the weekend of 15-16 August after an arbitration ruling favoured the league over the players’ union AFE.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the decision, made public on Monday, also endorses LaLiga’s plan for Segunda, with matchday 42 on Sunday 6 June and the promotion play-offs between 9 and 20 June.
AFE had pushed for a 23 August start due to the World Cup’s impact on player returns. It proposed matchday two on the weekend of 30 August and matchday three on Wednesday 2 September, with both divisions ending on 30 May.
The union argued that beginning that weekend would be harmful, as the World Cup ends on 19 July and players need at least 21 consecutive days’ holiday plus a full pre-season. It criticised commercial priorities over player welfare, called for new agreements for the top two tiers, and objected to the RFEF for interfering in the calendar process in favour of LaLiga.
LaLiga set the opening date after modelling, using AI, the national teams most likely to reach the semi-finals and final. It planned to track World Cup call-ups and transfer activity, then review all 20 squads before scheduling.
Clubs with a significant share of players involved in the semi-finals or final could have their first fixtures moved to 25-27 August or, on request, 18-20 August. The arbitrator judged LaLiga’s proposals lawful, aligned with its duty to draw up the calendar, and supported a Segunda run-in without midweeks.
