Liverpool manager Arne Slot has spoken positively about Giorgi Mamardashvili following the goalkeeper’s early appearances for the club. The Georgian international was brought in during the summer to add depth and competition, and his performance against Southampton immediately caught the manager’s eye.
“I think we’ve seen against Southampton how well he’s adjusted. We knew that we were bringing in a very good goalkeeper. But when he plays his first game, that’s always the best way of seeing that he’s adjusted well or not, and I think we’ve seen in that game that he’s adjusted really well to our goal, which is not a surprise because he’s a quality goalkeeper,” Slot explained.
Liverpool have long relied on Alisson Becker as the mainstay between the posts, with Caoimhin Kelleher providing reliable cover in recent years. Slot’s comments underline the expectation that Mamardashvili will now take on a similar role, offering assurance when rotation or injury demands a change.
“Now he can do what Caoimh [Kelleher] had to do so many times in the past, replacing Alisson – hopefully in a way Caoimh did so many times before,” the manager added.
Arne Slot has emphasised throughout his tenure that Liverpool’s success depends on a collective effort. The early bedding in of Mamardashvili reflects this philosophy, giving the club strength in depth as they prepare for a demanding schedule that includes both domestic and European commitments.
With Alisson still the undisputed first-choice, Mamardashvili’s role may be defined by opportunities in cup competitions and fixtures where the Brazilian is missing. Yet his early composure suggests he has the quality to make a genuine impact whenever called upon. Slot’s faith in him highlights Liverpool’s determination to maintain resilience in every department, ensuring the team remains competitive on all fronts.
