Paris Saint-Germain booked a spot in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals after edging Liverpool 4-1 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 aggregate draw Tuesday night at Anfield.

Despite falling short on penalties, Liverpool manager Arne Slot explained why the Reds exiting in the Round of 16 “feels unfair” for his side.

PSG struck first in the 12th minute when Nuno Mendes found Ousmane Dembele in the middle. Dembele quickly laid it off to Bradley Barcola on the right, and a fortunate deflection off Ibrahima Konate’s sliding tackle set up Dembele for an easy finish.

Neither side could find a breakthrough in extra time, sending the match to penalties. PSG converted all four attempts against Alisson Becker, while Gianluigi Donnarumma delivered in goal.

After conceding a penalty to Mohamed Salah, Donnarumma came up big with stops against Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones. Desire Doue calmly slotted the final spot-kick to send PSG through.

Following the Premier League leaders ousting from the Champions League, the Dutch manager shared his true feelings over exiting in the Round of 16 to PSG despite them finishing atop the league phase.

“It had everything you’d like to see from a football game,” Slot said speaking to Amazon Prime. “From a Liverpool perspective, you’d at least like to have a draw after 90 minutes but it came down to penalties.

“It feels unfair to go out at this round already, you’re at the top of the table then you face a team like PSG, but that’s also the nice part about football. Everybody around the world enjoyed watching this game and the margins are small, and if you want to win it you have to have some luck, we had it last week, I don’t think we had it today.”
