Liverpool, it's time. There's a massive decision to be made.
Liverpool fell to an embarrassing defeat at Manchester City on Saturday. They sunk 4-0 in their FA Cup quarterfinal and honestly, it could have been many more.
The Reds were awful, unable to stop City doing what they wanted and rarely coming up with ideas at the other end. The hosts thoroughly deserved their big win. Liverpool were fortunate it wasn't six or seven.
And so we all return to the same question: should Arne Slot stick around? The Dutchman won the Premier League last season but Liverpool have been below par at best for over a year now.
Some of their performances have been absolutely awful and worse than anything they ever served up under Jurgen Klopp. Things just aren't working and guess what! Paris Saint-Germain welcome Liverpool this week.
Liverpool are on the verge of something terrible, though. They can't afford to miss out on UEFA Champions League qualification for next season, not after spending so much last summer.
But it's difficult to see how Liverpool can achieve qualification or get past PSG with the current set of ideas. And that points back to Slot.
It really feels as though their best chance of either success comes with genuine change and that means moving on from Slot, who is failing to demonstrate an ability to turn things around. But this is decision time. Wait a week and the Champions League first leg may end that tie without a chance to turn it around.
Is there any point of moving on from Slot after that game, then? We're not sure. It either happens now or Liverpool wait for the rest of the season.
It's decision time.
Tactical Evolution and Performance
Arne Slot has continued to transition Liverpool toward a more controlled, possession-oriented system during the 2025–2026 season. Departing from the "heavy metal" football of the previous era, Slot’s approach emphasizes structured build-ups and inverted full-backs to suffocate opponents. However, this evolution has faced significant hurdles; as of April 4, 2026, Liverpool has struggled with defensive transitions and inconsistency, leading to 10 Premier League defeats and a current standing of fifth in the table. While possession stats have increased, the team has been criticized for being "boring" compared to previous years, particularly following recent setbacks against lower-ranked sides.
Mounting Pressure and Future Outlook
The Dutchman is currently facing the most scrutinized period of his Anfield tenure. Following a heavy 4–0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-final on April 4, Slot admitted fears that the margin of defeat could have been even larger. With a critical Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain approaching and rumours of a major summer squad exodus—including the confirmed departure of Mohamed Salah—Slot’s job security is under intense speculation. Although he retains the public support of Fenway Sports Group, internal discussions have reportedly outlined the next fortnight as a defining period for his future, with Champions League qualification viewed as a non-negotiable requirement for him to remain in charge.
