Arsenal are eyeing a move for Atalanta forward Mateo Retegui following the forward’s prolific start to the season.
Retegui signed for Atalanta in a €28m deal from Genoa in the summer and has had an explosive start to his career with the Europa League winners.
The 25-year-old has scored 11 goals in just 12 Serie A appearances to take an early lead in the race for the Capocannoniere award as the league’s leading scorer.
His performances have grabbed the attention of Arsenal, who are on the lookout for a centre-forward. Mikel Arteta failed to sign a striker during the summer window, despite Eddie Nketiah’s exit for Crystal Palace, and Arsenal’s inconsistent form has prompted the Gunners to reassess the market.
Transfer journalist Ekrem Konur has claimed Retegui is viewed as a cheaper alternative to Sporting Lisbon forward Viktor Gyokeres.
The Italy international could be available for around €50m (£41.4m) and would offer a recognised centre-forward presence to compete alongside Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.
Retegui, who was born in Argentina, has scored six times in 16 appearances for Italy at international level. He signed for Atalanta in the summer aftee Gianluca Scamacca was sidelined with an ACL injury.
