Arsenal won late against Newcastle United to close the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday, but they were only able to do so because Crystal Palace pulled off a win against Arne Slot’s side the previous day.

Despite a mixed start to the season in terms of performances, Liverpool had had a near faultless set of results.

They’d won five of five Premier League fixtures, one League Cup match, and one Champions League match for seven wins in a row, ahead of Saturday’s trip to Selhurst Park.

So for Palace to finally make Liverpool pay for another underwhelming display was a boost for title-chasing Arsenal. And it came about thanks to former Gunner Eddie Nketiah, who calmly dispatched a last-minute volley for 2-1.

Speaking after the match, Nketiah admitted he’d received some well wishes from people at his old club.

“I had a few thank you messages to be honest,” Nketiah said. “Yeah, a couple of the staff messaged me but I’m fully focused on life here and want to do well and help the team as much as possible.”

Nketiah did clarify that the messages he received weren’t from Mikel Arteta himself, but other than that, the exact senders are anyone’s guess.

Everyone at the club would be pleased to see Liverpool’s early momentum halted, whether Nketiah intended to help his old team or not.
