Arsenal v Lyon, 2011 semi-final that launched OL’s European dynasty | OneFootball

Arsenal and Lyon meet again on Sunday in London for a place in the Women’s Champions League final, their third such showdown. According to Le Progres, memories of 2011 have been revived by former Lyon pair Eugénie Le Sommer and Sarah Bouhaddi.

On 9 April 2011, the clubs contested their first European semi-final. The first leg at Gerland ended 2-0 in front of 20,000.

Le Sommer recalls it as one of the first times a Champions League crowd of that size filled the stadium. She remembers an exceptional atmosphere that night.

Bouhaddi chiefly remembers Lotta Schelin’s display. Schelin scored in the second and 11th minutes of that match.

That tie preceded Lyon’s era of European dominance, with eight titles. The latest chapter now beckons.
